A pond fountain in the front yard or backyard is a great thing to add beauty to a yard, but there is a lot of work that must go on behind the scenes in order for these ponds to get to a point that they are attractive.

• Filters – Pond filters are definitely not the most glamorous part of an outdoor pond, but these filters are necessary in order for water to be able to flow freely. One should check the filters often to make sure there are no items like stones or twigs that might affect the flow of the water in the pond fountains.
Pond pumps work hand in hand with pond filters. If a pond will include a fountain, it is important that the pump included with the fountain is strong enough to be able to force water through in order to create the desired effect with a pond waterfall or fountain. A pond that will not include moving water does not need a high-powered pond pump.
• Pond liners – Before a pond is ever filled with water, pond liners are first needed. A pond liner is effective at helping one be able to ensure that the water that is within a pond does not gradually seep out. Most pond liners are made of one solid piece, so that there are no cracks from which water can leak.
• Pond plants – Part of the attraction of a garden pond is the ambiance created by it. While waterfalls and fountains help, it is also important that there is a natural element to the pond. Aquatic plants can help make the pond look more realistic and natural. One of the most common pond plants is the lily.
• Koi fish – One who wants to place koi in the pond by his home must make sure that the pond is at least three feet in depth. Even though koi look like goldfish, they grow to be much larger and need to have enough room to be able to move around.
The overall size of the pond will determine how many koi fish should be included. A good general rule is to not include more than one koi fish per every three square feet of space in the pond.
Because of this, it is important that your koi pond is constructed to be large enough to be able to hold all of the koi without it being crowded in there.
